Corsair 4000D Airflow Review

Featuring a front panel covered in triangle perforations, Corsair's 4000D Airflow PC case has a distinctive-looking face and delivers what it promises: ample, well, airflow to keep your PC components cool under pressure. Priced at a low $79.99 with a tempered-glass side panel, it's far from the most feature-packed ATX mid-tower we've seen for under $100. But its affordability and construction quality make it worth a look if you're shopping for a spiffy-on-a-budget PC case while saving up for the stuff inside.

The Design: Triangles All the Way Down

The "Airflow" in the name is no idle boast. In addition to incorporating that perforated front panel, Corsair also left large gaps on either side of this perforated section that permit additional inward ventilation. The top is also perforated and covered by a large magnetic dust filter, and the back of the case has ventilation holes cut in it from top to bottom. Altogether, this makes for a clear path of low resistance for air to pass straight through the case. Two 120mm Corsair AirGuide fans are pre-mounted (one front, one back) to push things along.

The two sides of the chassis aren't quite as friendly in the airflow department. The right panel is a solid sheet of steel, and the left panel is tempered glass, without any cut-throughs for air to flow in or out on either side. This shouldn't hamper cooling much, however, due to the abundance of ventilation elsewhere and the front-to-back design.

On the inside of the case, the perforations continue. Like many other modern chassis, the 4000D Airflow is broken up into two main compartments. The upper compartment holds the motherboard, whereas the lower compartment is walled off behind a shroud that holds the power supply and has room for storage devices. Unlike on most rival cases, though, the metal sheet separating these two areas is covered in the same triangular perforations seen on the front of the case. This should help to keep the power supply relatively cool. In most such case designs, the supply gets isolated and has to fend for itself in terms of air through the bottom panel.

The rear panel has two slots for vertical GPU mounting alongside the seven PCI Express card positions. Like in most cases, however, the vertical-mounting hardware and the necessary GPU riser cable are not included; you'll have to find these yourself.

A Look at the Front I/O

A budget case is going to show its stripes in places, and the loadout of ports is one of them here. The front I/O panel of the Corsair 4000D Airflow (actually up on top of the case) leaves a bit to be desired.

This panel is rather bare by modern standards, with just one USB 3.0 Type-A port and one USB 3.1 Type-C port. Also present are a headphone/microphone combo jack and the usual reset and power buttons. That's it.

As prevalent as USB devices are today, we can all agree that just two USB ports aren't really enough for most folks. Really, this arrangement is often like having just one USB port, because not many devices have a USB cable with Type-C connectors on both ends. We think Corsair should have sprung for the extra port up here, or made both USBs Type-A.

The Building Experience

Building a system into the 4000D Airflow case is a predictable experience, and more positive than negative. The most notable issue I found is that the chassis' side panels are neither easy to remove nor to reattach. This is most notable with the solid metal right-side panel of my test sample. While getting it and the glass left panel on and off takes some finesse, it's doable with practice. Hopefully you won't have to do it much, once your build is done.

Fitting the motherboard into place is easy enough, as there's little in the way to block the board's installation. A ridge toward the front of the case permits cables to pass from the right side of the case (behind the motherboard tray) to the left, but this is positioned far enough forward that it shouldn't get in the way of putting in the motherboard. After getting the board mounted, I measured just under 1.5 inches of room between the edge of the standard ATX motherboard that I used and this opening, which made plugging in SATA cables quite easy.

I could, however, have done with more clearance at the top of the case. Right now, it's in a bit of a gray zone—the top of the case is spacious enough that you can access ports on the top of the motherboard (such as the CPU power connector and the CPU fan headers) and even toss in a top-mounted fan or two, but liquid coolers and their thick sandwiches of radiators and fans will likely get in the way of connecting headers up in this area. You'll want to do any fine wiring in this neighborhood before tackling the liquid cooling.

None of this is to say that you can't add a liquid cooler to the top of the case, but it would probably be a better idea to mount the cooler in the front of the case instead. If you do choose to mount it on the top, you should add it last, after you get the motherboard fully installed and rigged. Later tweaks might mandate removing the radiator.

Corsair added room in this case for a total of four storage devices. On the hidden side of the motherboard mounting tray are two 2.5-inch drive mounts, and at the bottom of the case is a drive cage that can hold two 3.5-inch or 2.5-inch drives. You also get a fan controller set behind the motherboard mounting tray. The two Corsair fans provided are wired into this controller box.

Corsair also added a nifty channel with Velcro ties that helps to keep cables neat and organized. This sits directly beside the cable cutout in the tray, which makes it convenient for running cables to devices on both sides of the board...

We've seen similar cable-routing creature comforts from vendors like NZXT of late, such as in the recently reviewed (and much more expensive) NZXT H710i. This kind of channeling should be standard equipment.

Verdict: Getting Into Your Flow Zone Can Be Cheap

Though it has a few limitations, Corsair's 4000D Airflow is overall a fine budget-to-midrange case. Building an uncomplicated air-cooled system inside it was mostly free of hurdles. The case may not be the most original of designs, but it does look nice when kitted out with a full complement of components and RGB lights. (Three front-panel RGB or ring-style fans would really shine.) Last but not least, the case is reasonably priced.

We've reviewed other cases in this price range that have scored solid marks, including the Deepcool CL500, the Deepcool GamerStorm Macube 310P, and the Be Quiet Pure Base 500. The 4000D Airflow rates more or less on par with the Macube 310P and just behind the CL500 and Pure Base 500. Ultimately, all of these are close enough to one another that picking whichever case tickles your DIY aesthetic best is the way to go—or, failing that, the one that is the lowest-priced at the time of your purchase.

MSI MAG B550 Tomahawk Review

With the dawn of the latest in-the-middle chipsets—AMD's B550 and Intel's H470 and B460—midrange desktop motherboards just keep getting better. That arguably goes without saying, but in this generation we're seeing more pronounced improvements. Case in point: MSI's MAG B550 Tomahawk ($179.99), which might be mistaken at a glance for a premium ATX pick. And the similarities go deeper than just appearances—with PCI Express 4.0 support, a 2.5Gbps NIC, and two 10Gbps USB 3.2 Gen 2 ports on the back panel, this board has a modern feature set that's comparable to what we have seen on many AMD X570 and Intel Z490 motherboards. This makes the Tomahawk a hard option to pass up in the midrange market, and our latest Editors' Choice winner among mainstream Ryzen desktop boards.

Design: An Axe-cellent PCB

MSI opted to color the MAG B550 Tomahawk in a mixture of black and gray. Black is the more prominent color, but there's a good amount of gray that adds contrast and keeps the board from looking too dull. MSI also put some RGB LEDs around the chipset heatsink that add some much-needed color to the board when it's powered up.

The chipset heatsink itself is average-size for a midrange motherboard, and smaller than you would expect to see on a high-end board. MSI configured this board with 10 digital power phases for the CPU, and three additional phases for other components. These are cooled by two relatively large heatsinks and should work well enough for everyday use and a bit of overclocking.

This board also has a rear I/O shroud and a permanently attached rear I/O plate, which makes installing the board in a case a bit easier. I don't always mention this aspect of boards because most upper-end boards I review nowadays have shrouds and plates. But midrange and low-end boards usually don't, so it's worth noting.

Two M.2 slots (down by the PCI Express slots) are covered over by heat spreaders. The uppermost M.2 port is set above the primary PCI Express x16 slot, and there is room here to install M.2 drives in the long Type-22110 (110mm) form factor. This slot also runs off the CPU's PCIe controller and can operate using either PCIe 4.0 lanes or 3.0 lanes. It also supports SATA M.2 SSDs.

The lower M.2 port connects to the board's chipset and is therefore locked into using PCIe 3.0 lanes; it supports PCI Express M.2 SSDs only. This slot is also in a more cramped location and can only accept drives measuring 80mm or shorter. I wouldn't consider this a drawback, however, as few M.2 solid-state drives nowadays use the longer 110mm form factor, and PCIe 4.0 support isn't so ubiquitous that every slot needs it.

A Look at the Networking, Audio, and Rear I/O

The MAG B550 Tomahawk doesn't sport a built-in Wi-Fi chip (likely due to cost reduction), but it does have two LAN controllers. (Serious gamers, for one, are going to opt for Ethernet anyway.) The main networking controller is a Realtek RTL8125B chip that supports internet speeds up to 2.5Gbps. This chip is becoming a regular collaborator on modern midrange and high-end boards, and it offers a significant step up in terms of performance over aging 1Gbps solutions. The second networking controller is one of those aging 1Gbps solutions I just mentioned—a Realtek RTL8111H. It can't compare with the RTL8125B chip, but it's a sensible option for a low-cost secondary NIC.

MSI chose a Realtek ALC1200 codec to drive the audio to the 3.5mm jacks on both the front and back panels. Information on this chip is scarce, but it appears to be a budget variant of Realtek's more widely used ALC1220. Most users probably won't be able to tell the difference between the two audio chips, so it should work fine for casual use.

The B550 Tomahawk's rear I/O panel could use a few more USB ports, but it's not bad for a midrange loadout. You get a total of six USB ports on the back panel, including one USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-A and one USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C, both supporting 10Gbps peak throughput. Two of the remaining ports are also USB 3.2, but these are of the slower Gen 1 5Gbps variety. The last two ports on the back panel are legacy USB 2.0 ports best reserved for mice and keyboards, and beside these is a PS/2 jack for antique peripherals.

Alongside the USB ports are two RJ-45 jacks for the wired NICs mentioned earlier, and five 3.5mm jacks plus an S/PDIF port for audio. Video connections on the board include one HDMI port and one DisplayPort connection, if you opt for a late-model Ryzen G series chip with integrated Radeon graphics. The rear I/O panel also has a button that can be used to flash the BIOS to a new version, which is a useful function to have, especially if you need a BIOS update to make the board support a newer processor. (It's important to note that the B550 chipset does not support first-gen and second-gen Ryzen AM4 chips. The only chips supported are the Ryzen 3000 and 5000 series.)

The Building Experience

The configuration of the MAG B550 Tomahawk makes it one of the easiest boards that I've ever set up in a case. Due to the limited amount of space, getting cables plugged into the correct place can be difficult, and this actually tends to be worse on high-end motherboards. Midrange boards like this tend to make the job relatively easy.

The CPU's power connector is typically one of the hardest connections to get plugged in, but the connector on the B550 Tomahawk is set far enough away from the VRM heatsinks that it's not too difficult to get at. The rear I/O shroud does get in the way slightly due to its height, but the heatsinks themselves are short enough to stay safely out of the way.

The CPU fan headers are similarly set far enough away from everything that they can be plugged in with ease. Other connectors, like the USB-C and USB 3.0 headers, are set so they stick straight out of the board. Some people prefer to have these set at a right angle along the edge of the board, and while that can result in a cleaner finished build (depending on the chassis), I actually find them easier to plug in when they are straight up like this. The only ports that are set at a right angle are the SATA 3.0 connectors, which, as I just noted, can have some advantages even if they aren't quite as easy to plug in.

A Brief Look at the BIOS

Like most MSI motherboards, the MAG B550 Tomahawk comes equipped with the company's Click BIOS 5 user interface. Upon first boot, this loads you into an EZ mode menu that has essentially everything you would want in a simplified interface. From here, you can select a boot device, enable a memory profile for the RAM, flash the BIOS, and view spec information about the system's hardware.

There are a few extra options here, as well, such as a menu for adjusting the speed of the system's fans, as well as a button to enable MSI's Game Boost auto-overclocking feature. Overall, though, the EZ mode remains quite simple, and it shouldn't cause much confusion for beginners.

Over in the Advanced section of the BIOS, you get the usual fare. There are several options for changing the less notable system settings, and of course there are overclocking tools. The layout for these is essentially the same as on other Click BIOS 5 boards, with quite a few options to help you eke out extra performance from the CPU and RAM. (Ryzen's general lack of much overclocking overhead is another matter, though.)

While testing the board, I ran into a minor issue with its RAM support. I test most motherboards (including this one) with a high-end Corsair Vengeance LPX 16GB memory kit that's rated to operate at a max frequency of 4,266MHz with timings of 16-22-22-39. The MAG B550 Tomahawk wasn't able to run this RAM with the XMP profile enabled, however. I was able to get the board to operate the RAM at 3,200MHz and 3,600MHz, though, and realistically this isn't a shortcoming. MSI says on the board's support page that its peak supported RAM speed with two single-rank DIMMs installed is 4,000MHz, dropping to 3,600MHz for dual-rank DIMMs. (Various overclocked modes are also supported, according to the spec sheet.) Just know not to overspend for higher-speed RAM than you can use.

The Bundled Software

MSI includes just a handful of drivers and utilities with this board. All of the drivers installed without any issue, and they don't warrant much discussion. As for the utilities, you'll find a customized version of CPUID's popular CPU-Z tool, along with MSI's Dragon Center software.

Dragon Center provides a wide range of features in a single app. Before I go into what Dragon Center does, I should note that this version of Dragon Center is available as a straight download from the board's support page—which I'm far happier about than I probably should be for such a small detail. With all the previous MSI motherboards that I've reviewed, the company didn't provide the full program in one download on its support page. Instead, the support page offered an installation tool rather than the program itself, requiring you to download a separate SDK package to complete the installation. I've complained about this at least half a dozen times to date, and I'm delighted to see that MSI has now opted to provide an actual download from the start.

As for the program itself, there's quite a bit to explore. If nothing else, you'll want to install it to control any RGB LEDs connected to the system, but it also offers a useful hardware monitor, in-Windows overclocking tools, a network manager, and a few gaming-related tools.

Verdict: B550 Priced (and Feature-Packed) Just Right

The MSI MAG B550 Tomahawk is a solid value at $179.99. It's not quite as feature-rich as a deluxe motherboard, and it wasn't able to handle my Corsair Vengeance LPX RAM kit at its full speed, but this is a midrange board, not a high-end one.

It's not likely that the board will need to operate with RAM clocked that high, and while it may not have all the latest bells and whistles, it has enough of them not to feel lacking. Its 2.5Gbps LAN connection is excellent for a midrange board, as are the two high-speed USB ports. This board nails the B550 balance and delivers exactly what a midrange platform should. It's a fine complement to the value monster that is the late-model Ryzen CPU family.

LG K92 5G Review

Over the past few years, midrange phones have come into their own. Gone are the mediocre build quality and disappointing displays; instead, you can easily find something with a gorgeous screen and top-notch construction for a reasonable price. Unfortunately, the LG K92 5G ($400) is the wrong kind of blast from the past. This 5G smartphone can't match its obvious competitors, the Google Pixel 4a 5G ($499) and TCL 10 5G UW ($400). It's a carrier-locked phone, like the TCL 10 5G, but only works on AT&T's painfully slow low-band 5G network. It also suffers from poky performance, short battery life, and lackluster build quality that make it hard to recommend.

Big Display, Flimsy Build

At 6.6 by 3.0 by 0.3 inches (HWD) and 7.1 ounces, the K92 5G is a big phone that will fight for room in your pocket. The front of the phone is dominated by a 6.7-inch LCD with pronounced bezels all the way around.

Display resolution clocks in at 2,400 by 1,080 with a 393ppi pixel density. The display is bright and crisp; colors skew slightly warm. Viewing angles are decent, but you'll definitely lose some clarity if you're not looking at the display head on. The biggest issue, however, is the very noticeable shadow beneath the camera cutout. Head on, you'll only notice a slight shadow, but if you look at the phone at any other angle, it becomes very pronounced.

The back of the K92 5G is constructed of a glossy purple plastic. It looks sharp at first but picks up fingerprints and scratches very easily. Though other midrange phones like the Pixel 4a use plastic backplates, they still feel substantial. The K92 5G, on the other, hand, feels a little flimsy. If you tap its back, you'll be greeted with a hollow thud.

There's a thick horizontal stripe for the camera module and flash on the back of the phone. Everything, with the exception of the primary lens, sits flush against the phone and looks very sleek.

The speaker grille, USB-C charging port, and headphone jack sit on the bottom of the bottom of the phone. The top is home to a SIM/microSD slot. On the left you'll find the Google Assistant and volume buttons. The buttons are thin and fairly flush with the phone, and if you have small hands they can be difficult to reach.

There's a power button on the right side of the phone that also houses the fingerprint sensor. It's accurate but a little slow. When you tap your finger to unlock, the screen goes dark for about a second, leaving you to wonder whether your fingerprint registered at all.

Though plastic backplates tend to withstand drops and dings better than their glass counterparts, it feels like there's very little additional support behind the K92 5G's backplate. When we've noticed this in the past, most often on entry-level phones, we've found them to be much more prone to cracks.

There's also no IP rating on the phone, meaning any accidental immersion in water is likely going to mean its demise. And then there's the issue of the display. LG doesn't state that the K92 5G uses any sort of strengthened glass for its display, and we reached out to the company and did not receive a reply. After some digging, it appears the display is made of traditional sodium glass, which will not weather drops well at all. If you're planning to make the K92 5G your next daily-use phone, you'll definitely want to pick up a sturdy case.

Half the 5G Goodness

When it comes to connectivity, the K92 5G is a bit of a strange bird. It's a carrier exclusive for AT&T and Cricket Wireless that is optimized for that network, and it is a 5G phone, but it will never work on AT&T's ultra-fast mmWave network because it only has a sub-6GHz modem. That said, AT&T has played down the importance of its mmWave network, to the point of never releasing a map of the areas it covers.

Overall connectivity is poor, but that's due more to AT&T's network and software requirements than to the K92 5G's hardware. We tested the phone on AT&T's 5G network in Memphis and recorded average speeds of 28.4Mbps down and 3.81Mbps up. On a less congested network in Arkansas, average speeds increased to 45.2Mbps down and 4.67Mbps up. I suspect LTE network speeds would be much better, but AT&T disables the option to turn off 5G connectivity on its phones, so there's no way for us to verify it or for a user to take advantage of it.

We found call quality to be adequate during our test calls. Maximum earpiece volume clocks in at 88dB, which is loud enough to use in just about any scenario. We noticed some static at higher volumes during half of our test calls. Noise cancellation, however, worked perfectly on every call.

Audio quality is disappointing. Though the K92 5G boasts stereo speakers, the top and bottom speakers are unbalanced; in our tests, the bottom speaker maxed out at 101dB compared with just 81dB for the top speaker. In general, audio is forward and harsh, creating significant congestion. Fortunately, there's a headphone jack on board for wired audio.

The K92 5G supports dual-band Wi-Fi, as well as Bluetooth 5.1. NFC is also onboard for mobile payments and boarding passes.

Sluggish Performer

With the exception of the recently released OnePlus Nord N10 5G, the LG K92 is the only 5G smartphone in the US that uses Qualcomm's Snapdragon 690 processor. It's a step down from the 700-series processors that have become common on midrange 5G phones such as the Google Pixel 4a, the Revvl 5G UW, and the TCL 10 5G UW. There's 6GB of RAM as well as 128GB of storage, of which just 95GB is available when you open the box. You can add storage with a microSD card.

In theory, the K92's Snapdragon 690 chipset should be powerful enough to hold its own for the average user, but we found it limped along in our tests. Apps took a little longer than expected to open, screen transitions lagged, and, on more than one occasion, the phone briefly froze up when we opened apps.

Gaming is a miss as well. We tested the K92 5G with Alto's Odyssey and Asphalt 8: Airborne for nearly two hours and noticed long load times and intermittent skipped frames. The phone froze entirely at one point while playing Asphalt 8, forcing us to reboot it.

Benchmark tests yielded interesting results. On Geekbench 5, a suite of tests that measures raw computing power, the K92 5G earned 602 single-core (SC) and 1,734 multi-core (MC) scores. That's on par with the OnePlus Nord N10 (578 SC/1,846MC) and even the more powerful TCL 10 5G UW (618 SC/1,911MC).

Of course, Geekbench results only tells part of the story. On PCMark 2.0 and Basemark Web, benchmark suites that use real-world applications, the K92 5G lagged behind on tasks like video editing and web browsing. Add in a GFXBench Car Chase Offscreen score of 14fps versus the average score of 21fps we've seen on Snapdragon 765 chipsets, it starts to look like the phone's underwhelming GPU may be at least partially to blame for some of the lag we experienced.

A 4,000mAh battery powers the K92 5G. Despite the phone's energy-efficient processor, its battery is anemic for a phone with a 6.7-inch display. In our battery drain test, which streams HD video over Wi-Fi at full brightness, the K92 5G eked out just 8 hours and 7 minutes before shutting down. What's more, we found that the battery depleted quickly even when it wasn't being used; during our week of testing, the battery drained an average of 17 percent overnight.

If you do find yourself veering into the red by the end of the day, the K92 5G supports fast charging with Quick Charge 4.0. That means you can easily gain a few hours of battery life in about five minutes, or add 80% charge to your depleted battery in about an hour. Wireless charging, however, is not an option.

Cameras That (Mostly) Shine in Good Light

On the back of the K92 5G, you'll find a quad camera stack with a 64MP primary lens with an f/1.8 aperture, a 5MP ultra-wide sense with an f/2.2 aperture, and 2MP depth and macro sensors. A 16MP selfie camera with an f/2.0 aperture sits on the front of the phone.

Let's start with the 64MP primary lens. In good light, it does a surprisingly solid job. Our test shots were crisp with excellent background detail and depth of field. In low light, there was some loss of fine detail, and we noticed overly aggressive noise cancellation in a few test shots, but overall, the K92 5G does well for a midrange phone.

The 5MP ultra-wide lens did a pretty decent job in good light. There was no complex distortion like we often see on midrange wide-angle lenses. However, there was a noticeable loss of fine detail in most of our shots. Low-light photos, on the other hand, featured noticeable edge noise. There were some unexplained halos in a few shots that may have been caused by natural phenomena.

The K92 5G's macro lens, like most we've tested, fails to stand out. Nearly all our test shots appeared flat and had significant detail loss in the foreground.

The 16MP front-facing camera does an excellent job in good light. All of our test photos were crisp with excellent depth of field. In low light, however, the selfie cam struggles. Our test shots looked flat and noise started to creep in around the edges.

LG offers several different Portrait mode options on the K92 5G. Thanks to the 5MP depth sensor, all work well on the rear camera. For our test shots, we used the Blur setting. All of our test shots had a natural-looking bokeh with accurate subject mapping.

Portraits with the selfie cam are a bit more hit or miss. We found issues with subject mapping around shoulders and hats in nearly every shot. In photos where the subject and background were the same color, we noticed areas where the bokeh effect simply didn't work.

Android 10 With Dozens of Unwelcome Extras

The K92 5G ships features Android 10 with LG's custom UI. Over the past few years, LG's skin has become more user-friendly, but it's still a pretty heavy-handed take on Android. Icons have a unique look, the Settings menu is organized a little differently, and even the Search bar is not the same as you'll find on stock Android. It's not a bad thing, necessarily, but if you're not used to LG devices, it takes a while to get your bearings.

Unfortunately, the K92 is filled with nearly two dozen bloatware applications, including shopping apps, games, and AT&T and LG's branded apps. It's excessive and completely inexcusable for an unsubsidized phone to ship with nearly 15GB of apps you didn't request.

It's not clear whether the K92 5G will get an upgrade to Android 11. If it does, expect to see it in the distant future, since it will need to be pushed through the carrier. We've reached out to LG inquire about future software upgrades but have yet to hear back.

Simply Not a Contender

The LG K92 5G sounds like a solid smartphone on paper, but we found it to be a weak competitor when compared to the Google Pixel 4a and TCL 10 5G UW. Given the quality concerns, poor battery life, and underwhelming performance—not to mention its mediocre display—it's hard for us to find any outstanding features that makes the K92 5G worth consideration. AT&T customers looking for a 5G phone will find the Pixel 4a 5G a far superior option.

New Nintendo Switch 2 release date, specs, leaks and more

Even with the PS5 and Xbox Series X finally out, anticipation for a Nintendo Switch 2 (or Nintendo Switch Pro) is still red-hot. According to recent reports, the next Nintendo Switch could be a beefed-up version of Nintendo's beloved hybrid console with new features and 4K gaming support.

Nintendo's next Switch likely won't deliver things like ray tracing or 8K gaming, but a more powerful Switch could help the company better compete with the latest next-gen consoles. And some rumors have pegged the Switch 2 as sporting some truly wild features, including potential dual-screen support.

Nintendo hasn't confirmed the existence of a new Nintendo Switch model, but the latest rumors indicate that a new Switch is all but inevitable. Here's everything we know about the New Nintendo Switch 2, including its possible release date, specs and features.

Latest Nintendo Switch 2 news (November 29)

  • The new GPD Win 3 gives us a taste of how a Switch Pro could work, with smooth 60 fps gaming on the go.
  • Taiwan's Economic Daily News reports that Nintendo is including a Mini-LED display on the Switch 2, and is gearing up to launch the console in 2021.

New Nintendo Switch 2 release date

Citing a Taipei-based report out of the Economic Daily News, The Edge Markets reports that a new version of Nintendo's popular hybrid console could arrive by early 2021. That was quickly followed up by a Bloomberg report that suggests that the new Switch could arrive next year complete with 4K support and an expansive new games lineup.

A subsequent Bloomberg report claims that developers are being asked to make their Nintendo Switch games playable in 4K, adding further weight to the possibility of an upcoming hardware upgrade.

Economic Daily News later reported that Nintendo was still planning a 2021 launch, and has been visiting companies in Taiwan to obtain displays for the new console.

Here's a look at when every version of the Switch has launched so far. Looking at these days, it's possible we could see an updated Switch by 2021 to coincide with the system's four-year anniversary.

  • Nintendo Switch: March 3, 2017
  • Nintendo Switch (upgraded battery): August 2019
  • Nintendo Switch Lite: September 20, 2019
  • Nintendo Switch 2/Nintendo Switch Pro: 2021 (rumored)

New Nintendo Switch 2 price

While there's no official price set for Nintendo's next Switch, it seems safe to assume it'll cost more than the $299 base model — and certainly more than the $199 Nintendo Switch Lite. In an interview with Gamesindustry.biz, Japan-based games consultant Serkan Toto predicts that the Switch Pro will cost around $399.

New Nintendo Switch 2 specs

The Switch Pro's rumored specs have varied based on different reports, with some claiming that the next Switch will be a modest upgrade and others hinting at a significant power boost for Nintendo's console. A sketchy, now-deleted 4chan post (via Inverse) suggests some major changes, including a custom Nvidia Tegra Xavier processor, a 64GB SSD, 4K video support, and two USB-C ports. This post also claimed that the Switch Pro would be a TV-only console, and won't be playable in portable mode.

Economic Daily News also claims Nintendo is set to include a Mini-LED display in the Switch 2, which is a big leap up from the 720p LCD display included in the original. Utilising Mini-LED tech would mean better responsiveness, contrast, and energy efficiency, all of which would be more than welcome on a new Switch.

However, a forum post on Korean website Clien (via TechRadar) suggests that the next Switch might not be a huge generational leap. The poster claims that Nintendo is working with Nvidia on a custom Tegra processor based on Nvidia's Volta architecture, and won't include the Tegra X1+ chip that many had expected the console to feature. As a result, 4K support may not be feasible for the Switch Pro.

The current Nintendo Switch packs a custom Nvidia Tegra X1 processor, a 6.2-inch, 720p display and 32GB of storage. In August 2019, the console saw a minor refresh, which bumped the battery life from an estimated 2.5 to 6.5 hours to 4.5 to 9 hours. In our own Switch battery tests, we found that the new model lasts nearly twice as long for games such as Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.

The Nintendo Switch 2 may also feature Nvidia DLSS 2.0 support, according to an Nvidia job ad spotted by Wccftech. The posting seeks a software engineer on the Tegra team to work on "next-generation graphics" and mentions gaming consoles by name. Considering that the Switch is the only Tegra-powered console out there, it's possible that Nvidia is conducting work on a CPU for a new model. DLSS (Deep Learning Super Sampling) is an AI technology designed to boost framerates in games, which could lead to much smoother performance if it makes its way to the Switch 2.

But improved specs could just be the tip of the iceberg for the Nintendo Switch 2. A series of code found in the Switch's April 2020 firmware update reveals what could be support for a dual-screen console, suggesting that the next Nintendo Switch may be a two-display device.

This wouldn't be a first for Nintendo given the company's popular Nintendo DS and 3DS handhelds, but we'd be curious to see how dual-screen support would play into the Switch ecosystem. Perhaps you'll be able to play in handheld mode while beaming certain content to your TV, similar to how the Wii U operated.

There are also some recent mobile GPU breakthroughs that point to a promising future for upcoming handheld consoles such as the Switch 2. Samsung and AMD are expected to be working on a new Exynos 1000 chip with AMD graphics built-in, which could give the Switch 2 a massive power boost if Nintendo decides to opt for that CPU over the aging Tegra X1 found in the current Switch.

One of the most recent notable mentions of the Nintendo Switch 2 comes from the developers of Eiyuden Chronicle, a throwback role-playing game that's currently on Kickstarter. As spotted by Nintendo Life, Rabbit & Bear Studios mention "Nintendo's next generation console" as one of the platforms the developer plans to release the game for. While the studio was transparent about having no inside knowledge to Nintendo's plans, the company noted that porting the title to the relatively underpowered Switch while building it for next-gen platforms would be an expensive endeavor.

New Nintendo Switch 2 features

If Nintendo does make another Switch-like console, it seems safe to assume that it'll once again allow you to play in TV, tabletop and handheld modes. But some recent Nintendo patents hint at some other interesting features that could either make their way to the new console or serve as a complementary device.

Nintendo recently patented a unique health-tracking device, which would be able to track your sleep, monitor your mood via microphones and sensors, and even change the odor of a room. Interestingly, the patented device has its own dock (much like the Switch), and seems designed to work with health-related games a la Ring Fit Adventure. It's too early to tell whether such a device will even come to market, but it will be interesting to see if Nintendo ups its fitness-tracking game in time for the next Switch console.

What we want from the Nintendo Switch 2

If the Nintendo Switch 2 or Nintendo Switch Pro does become a reality, there are a handful of features we'd love to see that could make it a compelling high-end option for Nintendo fans.

  • 1080p handheld gameplay: The Switch's 6.2-inch screen is limited to 720p in handheld mode, meaning you can't experience titles like Super Mario Odyssey and Pokémon Sword and Shield in their full glory. The ability to game on the go in 1080p would be a big reason to upgrade to a Switch Pro — if the console can muster 60fps at 1080p, even better.
  • 4K or 1440p support for TV mode. Considering that 4K consoles are out there and that the PS5 and Xbox Series X will support 8K content, it'd be nice to see the Switch Pro get a resolution bump. The new console would likely need a beefy new dock to support 4K or even 2560 x 1440 resolutions, but just imagine how glorious it would be to play Breath of the Wild in 4K.
  • Better ergonomics. We recently got our hands on Alienware's Concept UFO, which is a Switch-like portable gaming PC that features standard controller-sized buttons, triggers and grips. If Nintendo can devise new Joy-Cons that are bigger and more ergonomic without being too massive, the Switch Pro could be the most comfortable way to play on the go.
  • True Bluetooth support. While the current Switch features Bluetooth 4.1 for connecting wirelessly to Joy-Cons and Pro Controllers, you can't pair other Bluetooth gadgets (like headphones) to the console without an adapter. Nintendo, I just want to be able to pair my AirPods to my Switch without any extra fuss — make it happen!

Why we want a Nintendo Switch 2

The Nintendo Switch is an absolute joy of a system backed by some of the finest games Nintendo has ever released. But its hardware is starting to show its limitations more than three years after release, largely when it comes to ports of major third-party games.

Kotaku's Ethan Gach recently got his hands on the new Switch port of The Outer Worlds, which reportedly "looks so bad on Switch I'm tempted to tell even people who have no other means of playing it to stay away." Based on Gach's screenshots, the port looks incredibly blurry, and suffers from framerate drops. Gamers have had similar issues with ports such as Pillars of Eternity and Wasteland 2.

While Nintendo games such as Breath of the Wild and Animal Crossing: New Horizons are optimized to look and run great on Switch, the console seems to be running into a AAA games problem. And that could prove especially challenging for Nintendo, especially with a new crop of third-party games built for PS5 and Xbox Series X that may be more graphically demanding than ever.

Nintendo doesn't necessarily need a system as powerful as Sony's and Microsoft's upcoming console (the Switch has done just fine against PS4 and Xbox One), but a significant power boost could make the company's hybrid console even more appealing for fans of big third-party franchises.

Should I wait for a Nintendo Switch 2?

Considering that the Switch 2 is still a rumor at this point, we wouldn't count on it coming out just yet -- at least not anytime soon. The Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch Lite are at the top of our list for the best handheld gaming consoles, and we expect them to continue to get supported for years to come. So if you've yet to jump on the Switch bandwagon, you can do so with confidence that it won't be replaced anytime soon.

Plus, if there is indeed a Switch 2 or Switch Pro, chances are it'll work with your existing Switch game library. Nintendo has a history of supporting its handhelds through multiple iterations, with the Nintendo DS/Nintendo 3DS family supporting the same game library for more than a decade. Given how popular the Switch is, we expect Nintendo to take a similar approach for its current console.
