Samsung: Prepare for More Foldable Phones

Expect Samsung to release even more foldable phones next year.

“True to our heritage of staying ahead of the curve with trailblazing mobile tech, we’ll be expanding our portfolio of foldables, so this groundbreaking category is more accessible to everyone,” Samsung Electronics President TM Roh said on Tuesday.

The company currently has two foldable models up for sale, the Galaxy Z Flip and the Galaxy Z Fold 2, which both launched this past year. However, both products originally had starting prices at $1,380 and $1,999, respectively, before Samsung began giving discounts on them.

According to Roh, the Z Fold 2 offers a mere glimpse of what the company has planned for the foldable smartphone category. But more importantly, he’s indicating that prices may come down. “We believe everyone should have access to the latest mobile technologies and a spectrum of product options that offer unfettered, personalized experiences,” he added.

However, Samsung’s growing focus on foldables may come at the expense of the Galaxy Note line. Last month, Reuters reported that Samsung had no plans to release a new Note device next year in order to focus on foldable phones. However, to placate Galaxy Note fans, Samsung is working on adding a stylus to the Galaxy S21.

In today’s post, Roh made no mention of phasing out Note devices. But he did say this: “We’ve also been paying attention to people’s favorite aspects of the Galaxy Note experience and are excited to add some of its most well-loved features to other devices in our lineup.” Expect more details in January.
